“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22)
There’s something very powerful about a cheerful heart. Like a stick of dynamite, it is likely to go off and change the environment around everything its concussion touches…and it’s all positive! This kind of infectious attitude can brighten even the grouchiest of all individual’s days. It has the ability to move away from what’s wrong in the world to what’s right, what’s terrible about a situation to what’s great about it, or even who is a joy to be around. There’s just something magnetic about a person who is cheerful, looking for the next smile around the corner rather than the next brick to drop. I want to be that kind of person…don’t you?
Or take for instance the “crushed spirit.” It’s the man or woman who has not yet recovered from the sorrow of being emotionally brutalized. There are some who choose to stay locked and petrified with the trauma of the past rather than to break free from its icy grips. It’s not easy to change one’s thinking and “snapping out of it” does not come easily to all. However, when a person lives with a crushed spirit, it does feel like one’s bones are drying up on the inside, almost like a slow death. If you are there, don’t plan to stay there.
How do you move from crushed to cheerful? It may be something as easy as personal choice. You may not be able to change the situation, but you can change how you deal with it and how you view it. Like taking lemons and making pie or the proverbial lemonade, it is possible to change your attitude. The real question is: Do you want to? The choice is simple today…be a great prescription for others to take or a dry wind to parch the thirst of a weary traveler. Today, choose good medicine and ask the Lord above to give you the wherewithal to become just that…good medicine. If anyone knows how to change your chemistry, He does!
