“For I will forgive their sins and remember their wickedness no more.” (Hebrews 8:12)
I read a humorous story several years ago about a prisoner who was released from prison after serving his sentence. Released from his cell and past the guard gates, he walked into the fresh air of a brand new, free world. It was truly a breath of fresh air! He couldn’t contain his joy anymore and shouted at the top of his lungs, “I’m free! I’m free! I’m free!” A little girl who was in earshot of his celebration, yelled back at him, “That’s nothing, mister…I’m four!”
Such is the joy of forgiveness. Sadly, many of us, forget too quickly what it means to be free and forgiven. We take for granted the fresh air we breathe in spiritually every day and often fail to say “thank you” to the One who paid for our freedom. What a great word from this passage as God says, “For I will forgive their sins and remember their wickedness no more.” Just breathe this in for a moment today and think about all the sins you remember you willfully committed years ago. Recall for an instance, the pain you may have caused another person for what you did by your words or actions. Forgiveness of sin is no trite phrase or shallow concept. It is to be something truly celebrated and enjoyed.
But wait, there IS more… The Lord has said this, “…and remember their wickedness no more.” Though you and I will always be able to recall our wickedness, God has the ability to not remember our sin, our terrible sin any longer. Just breathe this in, too. This second breath will change your day and your life if you will camp here for just a moment longer. God chooses not to dwell on your sin, but instead sees you hidden in His Son, Jesus. It doesn’t get any better than that! There’s no more prison life for you because you have been ushered out of the gates of bondage and on to the roads of joy….go ahead and say it, “I’m free! I’m free! I’m free!”
