“Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” (1 Peter 1:17-19)
Much dialogue and discussion has been front and center over the years concerning immigration policies in the United States. “Who should be given citizenship?” is at the core of the rhetoric, which has often been heated. Additionally, “the dreamers,” young people who were brought to this country as infants or young children illegally have been caught in the heart-wrenching dialogue. In this passage, Simon Peter refers to fellow believers as “foreigners.” What a curious description!
Have you given much thought to that, as a child of God? You, if born in the United States, are a citizen of this country. You are given all the rights and privileges of citizenship, which is no small matter. Becoming a child of God, through repentance of sin and faith in Christ, has provided you with a heavenly citizenship, which not only has privileges now, but in eternity. Living today with an attitude of a foreigner is what the believer should really consider.
If you live now as a foreigner, your emotional roots will remain in your ultimate, though yet unrealized, heavenly home. Heaven is your home and earth, well earth is just as temporary as your physical time on this planet. Your ultimate home is heaven! When you are able to touch this with your heart, how you make your decisions, how you spend your life, what you do with your financial resources and how you allocate your time, will be completely redistributed. Choose to live here and now for the glory of God and use today to celebrate your King!
