“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
“The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.” (Revelation 22:21)
When I was growing up, my brothers and sisters and I were voracious readers. We went to the library on a regular basis, bringing home many books. We had varied interests and read everything: mystery, science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, romance, serious literature, biography, history, horror, you name it. Unbeknownst to us, my mom wanted to know what her children were reading. So, she would read the first and last chapter of every book we brought into the house to get an idea. To this day, mom still reads the first and last chapter of a book (even mysteries!) and then decides if she is going to read the rest of it.
There is one book that is worth reading from beginning to end. It has history, practical advice, beautiful poetry, and mystery. It includes biographies, including the four most important biographies ever written. It includes fantastic visions of the future which will certainly be fulfilled. It is a law book which fundamentally shaped Western law and our ideas of right and wrong. Most importantly, this book tells the story of God’s grace toward humankind.
I’m speaking of the Bible, of course. If you want, you can read the first chapter and the last chapter. If you do, I’ll guarantee you’ll want to read the rest of the book to see what is in the middle. You won’t be disappointed. So, take the time to read the whole book. Whether you do it in a year or if it takes a decade, you will say it was worth it.
