“The Lord opens the eyes of the blind.” (Psalm 146:8)

A disease that was causing me to lose my vision has given me a new appreciation for the wonders of the human eye.   It is a magnificent organ that allow us to see light, colors and three-dimensional shapes.  The Bible tells us, “The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear the whole body is full of light.” (Luke 11:34) Our eyes enable us to take in the world around us, to see where we are going, the colors of the rainbow, and a child’s smiling face.  At the same time, our eyes let us see evil and can entice us to sin against God.  In the Garden of Eden, Eve was led to sin against God when she saw that fruit from the forbidden tree was good for food and appealing to the eye. (Genesis 3:6)

Just as we have eyes to see the physical world, we have also been given spiritual eyes to see and understand the things of God.  Spiritual eyes light the soul, reaching to the depth of our heart to change our nature.  They are eyes of faith through which we can see things from a heavenly perspective and understand life’s meaning and purpose.  Our spiritual eyes help us discern right from wrong, help us resist temptation, and lead us in righteous living.

People who are born blind or lose their eyesight due to accident or disease live in a world of total darkness.  In the same way, there are many people today who walk in spiritual darkness – blinded by unbelief and sin.  Satan, who is the god of this world blinds people and hardens their heart, so they cannot understand the truth of the gospel. (2 Corinthians 4:4) It is only through faith in Christ Jesus that we gain spiritual eyesight.  Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” (John 8:12)  Once trusting in Jesus, there is no more blindness and our spiritual eyesight will never be lost.  How are your eyes…have you received your spiritual eyesight by trusting Jesus as your savior?
