The Road Down

When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” (Luke 19:37-38)

I have walked that road many times over the years. From the top of the Mount of Olives, through Gethsemane’s olive garden and toward the eastern gate of the Old City. As I write, I see the pavement, the trees, the stones, and can almost hear the cries of the first century crowd, welcoming Jesus into the city. It was a road down through people, a huge throng of individuals, who for the moment were welcoming the Great Teacher, the Powerful Healer into their town. In that moment, Jesus received their praise, but He knew where the road would take Him next.

You know the story, too. In a few short hours, the tables would be turned and the very place He had passed through to get to Jerusalem would be the place where He would be arrested. The road down would bring pain, sorrow, disappointment and disillusionment to His followers. They would soon be confused and scattered, but for this brief moment in time, there was praise and celebration, joy and verbal affirmation to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

I have often wondered, if I had been in the crowd that day, would I have turned aside to my business and not made time for Christ? If I had been walking along the street, when He came riding in, would I have joined in the praise? If I had lived during that time, would I have grabbed a palm branch and waved it in the air, shouting, “Hosanna?”

Those are questions with no answers, because just like me, we live in the now and not the past. But here in the now, are you celebrating the King of glory? Are you honoring Him with your words, with time and resources? This is the day to honor Him. This is the moment the Lord has given you to glorify and give Him credit for loving you and saving your soul! Shout glory to Him today! Make the road He traveled down for you a reason to bow before the Great Majesty of the Universe…His name is Jesus!

“Dear Lord, help me be today more than a watcher, but a participant in praise…beginning right now!”
