The Exit Sign

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:1-2)

Do you have a special place you go to when the going gets rough and you need to breathe and press the reset button? There’s something really refreshing about having a refueling station nearby. Road signs along the Interstates advertising gasoline stations just at the next exit have saved many motorists from running out of gas and being stranded.

Psalm 91 is a description of just that. It is a reminder to us that the Lord is there for us when we lean into Him. He provides everything we need for the journey…everything! There’s nothing we need which He will not freely supply to us at just the right time and place. The Psalmist describes the Lord as a shelter, refuge and fortress. That means He provides shade during the heat, a roof of protection from the wind, a hiding place from danger and a castle of stability when we are in need. There’s no doubt about it, we need all of the above!

The key is getting to that place, “in whom you trust.” Are you there today? Are you resting in His provision and protection in your life or are you still battling on in your strength, which is about to run out? Notice that this psalm begins with “whoever dwells…” That is a description of actually living there. This should be our home, our place, our special place. Many of us only find the place spoken of in this passage when we feel we are on the run, and completely exhausted. Don’t wait for that to happen. Choose now to live and breathe, navigate and dream the days of your life under God’s care. Open your Bible and begin to soak in the healing words of hope for your life. Take heart to this sign: “Exit Now!”
