The Rock

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.” (Psalm 18:2)

Concluding His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7:13–27), Jesus warns us about those who claim to be His disciples but their lifestyle says otherwise. A person is a follower of Jesus Christ based on faith and faith alone.  Not everyone who claims to KNOW Jesus is His disciple. They try to prove this to others by what they do, often in the name of God.  Jesus describes them as people disguised as harmless sheep but inwardly are ravenous wolves.  They are known by the fruit they bear – that is, the manner in which they conduct their lives.  Good fruit does not grow on thorn bushes or thistles.

Jesus is very clear when He says,“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.”(Matthew 7:21)  Jesus tells His followers to carefully consider the path they take in life.  There is “easy street,” connoting a life of sin and disobedience, which is broad and crowded, and the gate is wide that leads to destruction.  The narrow uncrowded way with the small gate, is a life of surrender to God that leads to heaven. (Matthew 7:13-14)

Choosing the right path parallels building on the right foundation.  Jesus ended His Sermon on the Mount with the parable about the wise man who built his house on the rock and the foolish man who built his house on the sand.  We don’t have to be engineers to realize that it is much better and safer to build on bedrock rather than sand. The rock in this parable is the foundation of the Lord Jesus Christ.  A life built on the Rock does not get flooded or blown away when the storms of life assault it.  A life without Jesus is like a house built on the sand and has a poor foundation. It has no stability and no security and is easily blown away and flooded by the difficulties of life. (Matthew 7:24-27)

What path are you taking and what is your foundation?  Have you placed your faith in Jesus Christ and accepted Him as our own personal Lord and Savior?  Do you obey His word and follow His will?  Remember, Jesus is the WAY that leads to eternal life and He is the ROCK by which we are able to withstand the difficult storms of life.
