“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophesy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.” – 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
When you accept Christ as your personal Lord and Savior and begin to follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you. Not only that, but the Holy Spirit also equips you with specific gifts for you to use to further God’s Kingdom and to minister to His people.
There are several different gifts that followers of Christ can receive from the Holy Spirit. For instance, there’s the gift of administration, which is the ability to organize and mobilize God’s people. There’s the gift of teaching, where you are able to understand the Word of God and explain it to others in a way they can understand it and apply it. There’s the gift of service, which prompts you to help others and jump in wherever you’re needed. Then there’s the gift of encouragement, where you’re constantly cheering other people on and building others up.
You can read more about these gifts, as well as the other gifts Paul talks about, in the seventh chapter of 1 Corinthians. The main thing I want you to focus on though with these gifts is that they come directly from the Holy Spirit. They are not characteristics or personality traits you developed or learned on your own. They are gifts that become part of your wiring once you enter into a relationship with Christ.
Each person is gifted differently and purposefully, so that we can all fulfill God’s plan for our lives. I would encourage you to ask the Lord to make it clear to you which gifts He has blessed you with, and to give you opportunities to use these gifts for His glory. When you use your spiritual gifts, you’re not going to feel exhausted or burned out. You’re going to be filled up because you will be intentionally using these gifts that are uniquely yours in order to honor your Heavenly Father and to help and serve those around you. And I can promise you, friend, that there’s nothing more fulfilling than that.
