This World Is Not Your Home

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

With so many wonderful, exciting, and beautiful things to experience on earth, it can be very easy for us to forget that we will not be on this planet forever. In fact, only a small percentage of our existence will be spent here on earth. James 4:14 says, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” Our earthly lives are just a small brush stroke in the grand scheme of God’s eternal masterpiece.

Unfortunately, many of us live like this is the only place there will ever be. Your life has been given to you to glorify God for as long as you are on this earth. Everything He’s given you He wants you to use for His glory. But the Bible promises that even beyond this life, if you are a follower of Christ, you will spend eternity in heaven.

I think one day when we’re in heaven, we’re all going to look back on our earthly existence and think, “Why were we so puckered up all the time? Why did we live so encumbered by the themes of this world, and the desires of this world, rather than living for Christ?”

It’s critical for all of us to understand that we need to prepare for the next life in this life. What are you doing today to prepare for spending eternity in heaven? How are you managing your priorities? How are you using your gifts and talents to bring God glory? My prayer is that you will take the time to answer these questions as you expectantly look forward to spending eternity in heaven with your Savior.
