For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.” (Galatians 5:17)
I see the flag flying. It’s a bright red flag, waving in the wind on the beach. It’s high enough for all to see, warning swimmers of the danger in the waters at this particular time. It’s a rip tide warning. A rip tide is a strong, overpowering current, initiated by the tide, surging back into the ocean. It’s a dangerous situation which can take even the best swimmer in a direction they never intended to go. Such is the power of the flesh. Like a rip tide, the desires of the flesh cannot only ruin your day, but also your life if you are caught in its clutches. The best advice is not to go into the water.
Remember, there is a war going on inside all of us. The power of the flesh must be put in its place every moment. However, before we do that, we must see the warning flags on the beach of our heart. Staying aware of the danger our flesh can get us into preempts taking the steps to get free from its power. It’s true, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…”
Are there any flags waving in front of you right now? Is the Spirit of God whispering inside your heart to stay away from a particular decision or specific relationship? He knows exactly how high to fly the red flags of warning. Whether you venture into the death delivering waters will be your choice. Thank Jesus now for your ability to recognize the conflict and identify its roots. Now, ask Him for the power to stay on the beach and out of the water!
