“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” – Matthew 7:21-23

There are going to be people you come across in life who seem to be doing everything right. From a distance, they look nothing short of perfect, and the pleasures of life they are enjoying seem to be proof of that perfection. But let’s not forget that just because someone does all of the right things and says all of the right things from our perspective, it doesn’t necessarily mean their heart is in the right place.

Jesus explained this truth to His disciples during His famous Sermon on the Mount. He says, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!” (Matthew 7:21-23).

In a nutshell, Jesus is talking about the people who will one day come to the gates of heaven and remind Jesus of all their righteous acts and accomplishments. But if these people never knew Jesus, if their hearts were never actually transformed by His grace, then their actions meant absolutely nothing in the Kingdom of God.

You do not become a follower of Jesus based on anything you’ve done. No amount of church services attended, hours spent in prayer or Bible study, or kind works done for others can save you from the consequences of your sin. Rather, you must understand your need for a Savior and allow Him to change your heart. When your heart changes, your actions will follow. But that change of heart must come first and foremost if you want to enter the kingdom of heaven.
