Don’t Let Your Love Grow Cold

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” – Matthew 24:9-12

In Matthew chapter 24, Jesus is talking to His disciples about what the world is going to be like leading up to His second coming. There are a few particular verses that we will focus on today that make it very clear that the time of Jesus’ return is coming soon.

At one point in His description, Jesus talks about how wickedness and evil will increase in many people. He says, “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold” (Matthew 24:9-12).

I’m sure as many of us read that verse, we can think of people we know who have turned away from their faith, who have been hateful towards others, or whose love has grown cold. It’s so disheartening to see how hatred is seeming to increase and love is seeming to decrease in the midst of our population. But as followers of Christ, we cannot allow our love to grow cold like the rest of the world.

Jesus Himself said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). We as Christians are supposed to be known by our love for others. We are called to love others like Jesus loves us, selflessly, sacrificially, and unconditionally. And with Jesus’ return drawing near, there is no time like the present to show this kind of love to the people around you in hopes of leading them towards Christ.

What is something you can do today to show love to someone else, someone who maybe has turned his back on his faith or who’s been hateful to you? How can you be a light for Jesus to this person? I hope and pray you will make the choice to love that person and to not allow your love to grow cold.
