When the Oxygen Masks Fall

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”(Hebrews 11:1)

“So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as He told me.”  (Acts 27:25)

As you walk, run, drive, or fly around this great earth God has given us, at times breathing becomes short, labored, or problematic.  As we age, often just climbing stairs will get us out of breath.  Breathing is taken for granted by most of us but it is essential for life on this planet.

After a recent airline tragedy, it was noticed that when the oxygen masks fell in the cabin due to a rapid decompression, many passengers placed their masks on improperly. Life-giving oxygen was at their fingertips, but many travelers obviously had not paid attention to the Flight Attendant safety demonstration prior to take-off. So I wonder, do most people not pay attention to Bible verses such as Hebrews 11:1 and what they are truly saying?

Try this exercise as you read on and take note as you breathe in God’s fine air from wherever you may presently be.  It could be a quiet breeze wafting through a forest you are passing through, or maybe the warm air surrounding you as you sit in a sunlit park, or maybe the turbulent air streaming in through a lowered car window, or maybe it is just the conditioned air that is keeping your home or office cool.   No matter where you are, I ask you to please take a moment, inhale a deep and full breath, and let it out at your leisure.

Well guess what? You didn’t see this life-giving oxygen you just now breathed in, did you?   You didn’t see this invisible but real element that you’re breathing right now as you read this.  It goes unseen but is truly there as you inhale, and I personally am thankful God has made it so plentiful.   I don’t see it, can’t touch it, but I surely have faith it will be there for my next breath and for all my future breaths while my body inhabits this earth. Understand, please understand, there is so much more in God’s world than what we can touch, feel or see.  So, whether strolling on the beach at sea level or flying high above the oceans at 35,000 feet, have faith that oxygen will be there.   Similarly, have faith that God is always there for us. And when God drops a lifesaving oxygen mask for you in your life, let’s hope you’ve paid dutiful attention to Him.
