“There was a man sent from God whose name was John.”(John 1:6)
When you read the Bible, it is so easy to just read it like a history book of religious happenings in Jewish history. It does speak of history but it is more than just history. Gleaning principles and applying the Word of God to our lives is essential to a healthy Christian life. In this passage, “John” is John the Baptist who had baptized Jesus. This man, who was “more than a prophet” was the forerunner of the Messiah and called Israel to repent and be baptized as a testimony of that repentance. Camel hair clothing and eating locusts, he was an exceptional man of God for a particular role in Jewish/Christian history. What a man of faith and obedience until the day he departed this planet!
We have a human suit just like John and we, too, have been sent from God to bear witness to the Lord Jesus Christ. As Jesus sent His disciples, we are in that same authority line with great responsibility. And think about this…God knows your name, and even the hairs on your head are numbered. Now, that’s personal knowledge which is recorded and held by the King of Glory!
So, how are you doing with the “sent” job? As you consider the Word and your responsibility to be faithful, even as John the Baptist, are you lined up to honor, glorify and obey the simple mandates from our King Jesus? The mandates are clear but it’s commitment to those mandates which will either set us on a different course than the world or create angst in our daily “follow-ship.” History may not record or even recognize for posterity what you do, but Jesus surely will. Choose to be faithful today, regardless of what it may cost you this day. Just follow on because you are sent!
