“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,” (Acts 3:19)
A dear friend of mine was driving to work one morning, mentally preparing himself to dive into the pile of work waiting on his desk. He sipped his coffee while navigating the familiar route; however, something was off. He had a nagging feeling in his head that he couldn’t quite reconcile. Finally, he diverted from his normal path and pulled into an almost deserted parking lot. There he sat for a minute before beginning to pray. The words he spoke to God that morning were ones asking for forgiveness. He had realized there was sin in his life that he needed to be free from. After finishing his conversation with God, he got ready to put his car into drive when his phone buzzed with an E-mail. He looked to see the subject line proclaiming the words, “You’re Clean!”
Now, it turns out that E-mail had come from his dry cleaner notifying him that his shirts were ready for pick up, but nevertheless, the symbolism of the message perfectly encapsulated what we as Christians need to know about God’s forgiveness.
God’s forgiveness is a gift and one He shares freely with those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. He delights in showing us His mercy by accepting all those who have gone astray back into the fold. This powerful truth gives us the ability to heed God’s call to emulate Christ, as we can take comfort in knowing, if we stumble, it does not negate God’s love for us. Instead, He will be there, anxiously waiting for us to turn away from the sin bogging us down and again turn to Him so that he can embrace us and proclaim those wonderful words, “You’re clean!”
What an incredibly loving and merciful God we have! Let us rejoice in that fact today and always!
