“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Ephesians 5:1)
Years ago, in the early days of our marriage, my wife and I were having a disagreement in front of my mother, who was visiting us at the time. After answering the telephone, and completing the conversation, I hung up the phone. My wife immediately asked me, “Why do you always lower your voice when you answer the phone?” “What? I don’t do that!” I said with passion.
“Oh, yes you do!” she said with greater passion.
Like grade school kids, arguing on the playground, the volume increased along with our personal conviction of our perceived truth. Just then, my mother said, “You know, your dad used to do the very same thing!”
Nothing is worse from a man’s perspective than to be proven wrong by not only one, but two women at the same time. When your mother and wife are on the same side, every man knows surrender is the only way out! And they WERE right!
Though I was unaware that I had copied my father’s telephone answering voice, I had. I don’t know how many times over the years I had heard him pick up the telephone but one thing was for sure: I answered the phone just like him. That’s the exact same thing that the Apostle Paul was telling the Ephesians to do. Follow God’s example as set forth by Jesus!
How does that happen? How does one live out such a command? These are tall walking orders, aren’t they? To walk in the way of love all the time, to love others with reckless abandon, and give yourself up for others is a trifecta that seems impossible to emulate. Don’t give up just yet on this ideal. I suggest, “Remember who you are.” You are a child of the King, with the spiritual DNA now of Christ residing in you since your conversion.
As you spend time daily with Jesus, walking with Him more than one day a week, you will find yourself copying His lifestyle…and you won’t even know that you are doing it. There will be no argument to win, because now for you, it’s no longer about winning, but giving. If someone either thinks or actually asks out loud, “How do you live like Jesus lived? I have watched you for so long, and you surely walk like Him!” You can be sure your Heavenly Father will validate the truth.
