“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.” (Luke 2:1-3)
Nobody wants to register to pay taxes, but that is what Joseph and Mary were on their way to do, even in her ninth month of pregnancy. From a personal perspective, such timing is hard to understand. Why would God allow this to happen to His special couple? It didn’t make sense to them, but you do not find them anxious about the situation or the timing. We know now that the Lord was fulfilling the prophecy of the Messiah’s birth in Bethlehem. His timing is always right on target.
But what about you and your situation today? Are you a bit confused as His child about your present circumstances? Are you gazing toward the heavens and crying out, “Why, Lord?” If so, it’s acceptable to do so. What you are feeling is just what you are feeling. Not being able to make sense of God’s timing for your life is understandable, especially when the path you are on doesn’t have clarity right now.
So, what should you do? Keep trusting and keep walking forward. That’s what Joseph and Mary were doing, when God made it clear to them in His special way at His perfect time. They kept trusting and kept walking forward. How could they do that? They knew that the Lord had shaped their circumstances for His perfect will to be accomplished through their lives.
Just because you are not the “Holy Couple” doesn’t mean that you are out of His care. Instead, as a child of God, rest in this thought: “I am His and He is mine. My next steps are under His care.” Trust God to use all things under His control to help you navigate your next steps forward. Be expectant, even now for the unfolding of His purposes for your life.
