The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. (Mark 1:22)
There was something completely different in the way Jesus taught. I have been in the very synagogue where Jesus taught in Capernaum. As He spoke then, He is still speaking through His word, the Bible today. There is still something very different in how He speaks.
The teachers who the people had previously been listening to didn’t have that sense of authority in their voices. Their wisdom was most likely only linear, limited to: “do this” and “don’t do that.” Jesus brought a new way of thinking about God, and a fresh way of understanding the Father’s will. He was passionate about people encountering His Father and He used illustrations they understood in ways they could relate. He spoke without any “maybe’s,” or “could it be’s.” There was certainty which flowed from His lips.
The rocks in Capernaum are silent now, except to remind us of a time when God physically walked among us and taught us personally. If, indeed the Messiah lives within you, you also have that authority to teach and proclaim with the same authority He spoke. As His representative, here and now, speak of the certainties of the Word of God. Don’t reshape its words to comply with our present culture. It’s our culture which needs to comply! Just be the spokesman for the Lord where He has planted you today…and speak with His authority!
