“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:9-12)
In Matthew Chapter 24, Jesus was talking to His disciples about what the world was going to be like leading up to His second coming. We will focus on a few particular verses today to make it very clear that the time of Jesus’ return is coming soon. At one point in His description, Jesus talked about how wickedness and evil will increase in many people. (Matthew 24:9-12)
As many of us read that verse, we can think of people who have turned away from their faith, who have been hateful toward others, or whose love has grown cold. It is so disheartening to see how hatred is increasing and love is decreasing in our society. As followers of Christ, we cannot allow our love to grow cold like the rest of the world.
Jesus Himself said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35) As Christians, we are supposed to be known by our love for others. We are called to love others like Jesus loves us, selflessly, sacrificially, and unconditionally. With Jesus’ return drawing near, there is no time like the present to show this kind of love to the people around you in hopes of leading them to Christ.
Is there something you can do today to show love to another person, someone who has turned his back on his faith, or who has been hateful to you? Can you be a light for Jesus to this person? I hope and pray you will make the choice to love that person and not allow your love to grow cold.
