Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)
We live in a culture of selfishness; there is no denying it. It seems like everyone is looking out for number one, always figuring out how they can get what they want while refusing to acknowledge the needs of others.
As followers of Christ, we need to be different. We need to put others’ needs and desires before our own. When we do, not only will we be loving others well, but we will be setting an example of loving like Jesus did. Thereby, we are pointing other people to Him.
Jesus modeled perfectly how to lay down your life for someone you love. He was a shining example of selflessness, one that we should strive to follow in our own relationships. We need to learn to lay down our lives, our needs, and our desires for the sake of loving others. It’s not all about us; the world does not revolve around us. Instead, we should build others up and put others first by laying down our lives the way Christ exemplified.
How can you lay down your life for someone this week? How can you practice selflessness by caring for and meeting the needs of someone else? I hope you will pray and ask God to give you more opportunities to lay down your life so that you can love others well and honor Christ in the process.
