As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:1-5)
We want to live a fulfilling, satisfying, purposeful life. We have a desire to feel fully alive. If we want to see that desire fulfilled, we must accept Jesus Christ as Lord. That’s where life begins. Before we can accept Him as Lord, we must realize that without Him, we are in fact dead.
When Paul wrote the letter to the church at Ephesus, he explained in detail what our journey looks like, starting from being dead in our sin to becoming alive in Christ. He talks about how we once lived according to the desires of our flesh, only wanting to gratify our sinful nature. He goes on to say that when we were spiritually dead, we were considered foreigners to the promises of God. We were without hope and without love. 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. (Ephesians 2:12)
Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there. This past weekend, we celebrated the moment in history when we were given a chance to experience eternal hope and unconditional love from our Heavenly Father. When Jesus died on the cross for us, He bridged the gap between us and God. He made it possible for us to live a purposeful, fulfilling life, one that is fully surrendered to Him.
Let me ask you a question: Are you spiritually alive today? Has there been a moment in your life when you fully surrendered to the Lord and made the decision to follow Him? If so, I hope you are living in all the hope and freedom that has been offered to you. If not, there is no time like the present to walk away from your old life and walk toward your Father in Heaven. You no longer have to be a slave to sin. You don’t have to be spiritually dead any longer. You can experience life to the fullest if you choose to give your life to Christ. If you haven’t already made that decision, I pray that you will do so right now.
