All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
There is something about being a man that makes us want to ignore instruction manuals and instead figure out things on our own. If you are a man reading this, you can probably identify with this truth. If you are a woman, I am sure you have encountered at least one man in your lifetime who fits this statement.
I am personally guilty of ignoring the instruction manual myself. One time, I decided to assemble a swing set in the backyard. I thought I had everything figured out, never once having looked at the instructions. Unfortunately, when I finished, the swing set wouldn’t stand up on its own. It was then that I glanced over and saw that I was missing a piece. As a result, I had to take the whole thing apart and put it back together again.
Many of us have faced similar situations in our lives. We think we have everything figured out. We think we can get by without any help or any instructions. Then, when things fall apart, we say, “I guess I need the instructions after all.”
God’s Word was given to us so that we could follow its guidance and instruction. If we do, we will often avoid the crumbling and crashing down of certain aspects of our lives that would otherwise occur if we chose to ignore Scripture.
Accordingly, the next time you are tempted to figure things out on your own, don’t make the same mistake I did with the swing set. Don’t wait to fail before opening God’s Word. Instead, look to His Word first and foremost, so that you can live your life in a way that produces your ultimate good and His ultimate glory.
