In the beginning, God… (Genesis 1:1)
Because this is a brand-new year, many people start with New Year’s Resolutions. With a desire to do better with their diet, finances, job, dreams, and relationships; thousands of people will resolve, with good intentions, to begin again. Sadly, those commitments, made in light of tradition, fall sadly short on the longevity table. They don’t last very long, do they?
The problem with most commitments is where they start and where they are rooted. If a person has a firm grip on personal discipline and mental tenacity, new commitments have a chance to succeed, but only barely. Let’s face it, emotional commitments, regardless of how needed and worthy the goal, often fall short. The reason for this is the root of the decision. If the root is located in the flesh, the flesh must produce. Sadly, flesh power is short lived and limited in its endurance.
The greatest place to begin, especially in any new beginning is with God. “In the beginning God…” is the place to start. It is where creation all began and it is the very place where our new life in Christ started. If we do not start with the Lord on any endeavor, we have a difficult time getting off the starting blocks, much less making it around the track for even one lap.
Today is your opportunity to begin a new year with a fresh commitment to Jesus. Ask Him what He desires of you and be open to what He impresses upon your heart as you study the Word of God. In fact, this may be a great day to begin a new reading program in the Bible…you can’t go wrong there! Begin again, now!
