What To Seek Out In A Church

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (Colossians 3:16)

Yesterday we discussed some of the qualities that are important to look for in a church home. Today, we’re going to continue that list and talk through a few more important qualities to seek out in a church or to make sure your current church has.

In addition to the three qualities we listed yesterday, the fourth thing to look for is a church that loves to worship the Lord and not just sing songs to each other. Find a church that is in love with singing the words to the Lord, regardless of what the melody sounds like. Every generation has a different sound. I think that is why God didn’t save the musical lines and notes from the First Century. He allows all kinds of generations to express their worship to the Lord in their own musical genre. It is not about the melody; it is about the words you sing to the Lord. That is what counts.

Fifth, look for a church that has a heart for world evangelism while also caring for the needs of its community. Can you see our walking orders? We don’t need a new vision statement. Jesus gave us the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations. These are our walking orders. So it’s important to find a church with a balanced ministry of world evangelism and local ministry.

Finally, look for a church that cares about your spiritual growth. Your church should care about you spiritually – your growth and your discipleship – more than anything else. If a church isn’t striving to help its people grow in their relationships with Jesus, the church will never grow and thrive as a body.

I know this has been quite an extensive list we’ve covered these past two days, but every single quality we’ve discussed is an important quality to look for in a church home. So if you’re currently looking for a church home, my prayer is that you will pray and ask the Lord to help you find a church that has each of these qualities. Or if you currently have a church home, I pray that you would ask the Lord to give you discernment as you discover whether or not your current church has these qualities, and if they don’t, that He would give you the courage to go out and find a church that does.

That’s what I love about Westside. It has helped me grow in my faith by leaps and bounds. I have established my friends that I have had for over 25 years and we have done ministries together. Reaching out to the world of unsaved people and helping those within our circles of acquaintances. Plus being there for each other. God has led me to a church closer to home and it is just as much having a heart for its congregation and a heart for the lost and for missions. I thank you, Pastor Dodd for being a faithful servant of God for leading his flock and reaching out to the unsaved world

I am new to this ministry. Loved the devotional today. I’m looking for the first part with the first things to look for in a church.
