Ghost Town

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 3:20)

As you know, I love riding motorcycles. For at least a decade, a group of us will get together every year and take a motorcycle trip. On one of the rides, we were heading back home. We went through an extremely windy section in Kansas, out in the middle of nowhere. When we decided to get off the road, we saw a small town. We had no idea what the town’s name was.

When we stopped, we quickly realized this place looked like a town where time had stood still. Before the Interstate bypassed the town, it was probably a thriving town. Now, it was nothing. As we drove through, I found myself amazed at the main street of this town.

It was filled with abandoned buildings that were boarded up. Some of them had signs on the windows of once thriving businesses. While riding through, we quickly pulled up our masks from our helmets. I caught the whiff of mildew and found myself feeling very sad. Once, there was a thriving little town here, and now it was nothing. Only one or two buildings were operational, while over 90 % of the buildings were abandoned.

When I see things like that, sadness comes over me. I am thinking, for whatever reason, it is lost and gone. It is never to be revived again. That is the way this world will be one day.

We need to understand that the epitaph for our world is clear in Scripture. We need to be reminded that this world will not last forever. The economy here will not last forever. This World System will not last forever, so don’t build your hope here. Our hope is to be built in heaven, our true home. That’s where we will spend eternity. We were made for that eternal home!
