The Voice of God

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. (Matthew 1:24)

The most under-rated character in the entire Bible is probably Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus.  Overshadowed by Mary’s role as mother, he was a quiet, strong man. He was value-driven, but sensitive to the voice of God.  This is a great characteristic of leadership!  He heard the voice of God and did what he was told.  This is not as easy as it sounds.

Joseph was considering divorcing Mary when he heard she was already pregnant. During a restless night,  God spoke to him and assured him about his role in this dramatic new beginning for the Kingdom.  Did you realize that the engagement period was so binding that a person had to divorce the intended partner to get out of the arrangement, even before the wedding took place?

It happened again after the birth of Jesus. God spoke to Joseph and directed him to hide in Egypt while Herod ruled harshly with a bloody sword.  Responding quickly, Joseph listened and obeyed.  He was a leader who listened to God. We need that spiritual sensitivity at all times in order to be in the right place at the right time to accomplish the right things in the right ways.  How does a person stay in that position?

Just like Joseph, we need to be flexible with our agendas (and we all have agendas).  Our days are usually mapped out by goals to reach and missions to accomplish.  When we are overly focused on what we want to do, we can often miss those moments of divine intervention. We can be so intent on completing our projects that we miss the voice of God. What is He saying to you about what you are doing and where you are heading?

We don’t have three points for you to learn this spiritual position.  We don’t need a sermon about this.  We just need to be still long enough and listen to the voice of God. What is He saying to you today?
