Love Is Something You Do
"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." — 1 John 3:18
Is your love visible?
This last week, we received an amazing answer to our prayers. After months of hospital stays and much time in a physical rehab facility, my wife Ginger finally came home.
As she was lying in bed, I put my hand on her and said, "I'm really glad you're home." She looked at me and said, "Really?" I said, "Yes, because this is where you're supposed to be." She said, "Do you really feel that?" I said, "Well, I will tell you that my schedule now is having to change, but yes, I really feel that."
Even though I've had to rearrange things to help her walk down the hall to go to the bathroom, I know that I am privileged to be able to do that.
You see, love is something you do. It is not just something you feel.
We live in a culture that defines love as an emotion. If you feel warm and fuzzy, that's love. If the feeling fades, the love must be gone. But that's not how God defines love.
Real love shows up. Real love rearranges schedules. Real love serves when it's inconvenient. Real love does the hard, unglamorous, behind-the-scenes work that no one applauds.
God wants us to be men and women who really love each other—not in words only, but in action.
When is the last time you encouraged someone? The body of believers is a very powerful body. We need to express our love and appreciation to each other more than we do. We need to be more verbal than we are.
Here's your assignment this week: Show that you love people who love Christ. Find them. Write an email. Pick up the phone. Let them know you are praying for them. That will make a difference in your life and in their life.
Maybe someone in your life needs practical help—a meal, a ride, a listening ear, a hand with a project. Don't just tell them you love them. Show them.
Love isn't a feeling you fall into. It's a choice you live out. Every single day. In small, ordinary, sacrificial ways.
What will your love look like today?
