Walking Toward the Light
"If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." — 1 John 1:6-7
Are you walking in the light?
This is one of the first questions 1 John asks to help you verify your faith. In other words, are you doing what God wants you to do? Are you living like He wants you to live? Do you have a propensity toward wanting to honor the Lord?
Notice—it doesn't ask if you're perfect. It asks about direction. Which way are you walking?
Walking in the light means you're moving toward God, not away from Him. It means when you sin, you don't stay there. It means you have a genuine desire to please Him, even when you stumble.
Walking in darkness is different. It means you're comfortable in the shadows. You hide things. You avoid accountability. You make excuses for sin rather than confessing it. You're moving away from God, not toward Him.
Here's the beautiful part: When we walk in the light, two things happen. First, we have fellowship with one another. Real Christian community happens when believers are honest and transparent, not hiding in darkness. Second, the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin. Not some sin. All sin.
If you walk in the light, you will have the confidence in your heart to say "Yes," you have received the free gift of salvation from God. Your direction confirms your conversion.
So ask yourself honestly: Which direction am I walking? Am I moving toward the light or away from it? Do I have a genuine desire to honor God with my life?
If you can answer yes—even imperfectly, even with stumbles along the way—that's evidence of genuine faith. You're walking in the light.
If you realize you've been walking in darkness, today is the day to turn around. Step into the light. Confess what's hidden. Start walking toward Him again.
The light is where life happens. Walk in it.
