Get to Know Them Now
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." — John 13:34
Do you know the people sitting around you at church?
Think about it. You will spend all eternity with believers. Look at the person who is sitting next to you. Look at the person who is sitting behind you. Do you want to spend eternity with them?
You might say, "I don't even know them."
Well, you had better get to know them. There is a good possibility that they know Jesus. God has given you all the time right now that you need; He wants your life to count in their life, and He wants their life to count in your life.
This isn't optional. This is part of what it means to follow Jesus.
We come to church, sit in our favorite spot, avoid eye contact, listen to the sermon, and leave. We treat worship like a private transaction between us and God. But God designed the church for community, not isolation.
That person you've never spoken to? They might be going through the hardest season of their life. That family you've never introduced yourself to? They might be new and desperately hoping someone will welcome them. That elderly member sitting alone? They might not have talked to anyone all week.
You have an assignment from God. It's not complicated. Get to know the people around you.
Learn their names. Ask about their week. Find out their story. Pray for them. Let them into your life.
Eternity is a long time. Why wait until heaven to start building relationships with people you'll be with forever?
The ground is level at the cross. The CEO sits next to the janitor. The doctor sits next to the unemployed. All equal. All family. All heading to the same eternal home.
Start acting like family now. Get to know them. Your life will be richer for it. And so will theirs.
