Put All Your Weight Down
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." — Proverbs 3:5
What does it mean to believe?
The word believe is a word that describes putting all your weight on Jesus, the Son of God. Let's compare this to the seat you are occupying right now. You are putting all your weight on this seat.
Many of you came into this auditorium and sat down without a moment's hesitation in your "assigned seat." You had the presupposition that this chair would not break. You did not test it out. You simply put all of your weight on this chair, and you are still doing that.
This is what the word believe means. It means you are trusting Him to do what He said—He will give you eternal life.
Here's the question: Have you put all your weight on Jesus?
Some people have one foot on the chair and one foot on the floor. They're half-trusting Jesus and half-trusting themselves. They believe in Christ, but they're also hoping their good works will help. They trust His grace, but they're also counting on their religious performance.
That's not faith. That's hedging your bets.
Real belief means total dependence. You're not holding anything back. You're not relying on a backup plan. You've committed everything to Jesus and trusted Him completely with your eternal destiny.
When you sat in that chair this morning, you didn't hover over it, keeping most of your weight on your legs just in case it collapsed. You sat down fully. You committed completely. You trusted entirely.
That's what saving faith looks like. Not intellectual agreement that Jesus existed. Not general acceptance that Christianity is probably true. Complete trust. Total dependence. All your weight on Him.
Jesus plus nothing gives you eternal life! Do not throw the works aspect into it. Do not think that you can add anything to the finished work of Christ. It is an insult to what Jesus did for us on the cross.
Stop hovering. Stop holding back. Stop hedging. Put all your weight on Jesus. Trust Him completely. He will hold you. He promised.
