Finish the Race

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." — 2 Timothy 4:7
 
How do you want to finish?
 
These are some of the last words the apostle Paul ever wrote. He penned them from a Roman prison, knowing his execution was near. No self-pity. No regret. No fear. Just three quiet statements of a life well spent: I fought the fight. I finished the race. I kept the faith.
 
That's how I want to finish. Not just starting strong, but ending faithful.
 
Plenty of people start the Christian life with enthusiasm. The hard part was never starting. It's finishing. Staying faithful decade after decade. Loving Jesus at seventy the way you did at twenty. Keeping the faith when your body slows down, when friends fall away, when the culture shifts around you.
 
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1).
 
Notice Paul didn't say he won the race. He said he finished it. God isn't asking you to come in first. He's asking you to stay in the race all the way to the end.
 
Wherever you are on the course, the goal is the same: keep running. Don't coast. Don't quit. Don't let the passing years steal your passion for the One who saved you.
 
One day you'll cross the finish line. And when you do, may you be able to say the same three things Paul did.
 
Fight the good fight. Finish the race. Keep the faith.
 
There's a crown waiting.
