Remember Who God Is
And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:19
In the midst of whatever you are going through today, you need to remember who God is. I know many people are going through difficult seasons in their lives. Although you might want God to immediately remedy that situation, you need to look to Him first.
The reason you need to look to Him is that He is in charge. When we are oppressed, disappointed, and brokenhearted, healing begins when we understand who God is. When things come unraveled in our lives, and when fear seems to be the entree we are supposed to eat, we can find great peace in God. So with this in mind, I want us to look at some of the names of God and learn more about who He says He is.
First, God is Adonai, which means “I am He who reigns.” This name is used over 300 times in the Old Testament and 200 times specifically in the book of Ezekiel. It is a very familiar word in Hebrew. “Adonai” means, “I am He who reigns.” It refers to God's ownership of all things. In Isaiah 6, this name describes His lordship. In the Greek, the word is translated “Kurios,” which means Lord or boss, totally in charge. The final word lies with Him.
Second, God is Jehovah, which means, “I am that I am.” This is the most holy name of God. In fact, all of the other names are a derivative of this name. It is “Jehovah.” But it’s important to note that this name is not really a word in Hebrew. Instead, that is the German pronunciation of the Hebrew word, “Yahweh.”
Yahweh is used 6,800 times in Scripture. “Yahweh” literally means, “I am that I am.” In other words, He is present with you and He has always been present. He has existed and will exist for all of eternity.
Third, God is Jehovah Jireh, which means, “I am the one who provides.” This is the name that was given to Abraham when he was offering Isaac as a sacrifice. Abraham was instructed to go to a mountain in the area of Moriah and offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. Why would God do that? I don't know, but God had a plan, and God knew the plan beforehand. He had already put it together.
When they got up to Mount Moriah, the place God had shown him, Abraham raised his knife to sacrifice Isaac. The angel of the Lord called his name twice and Abraham stopped and said, “Here am I,” and held his hand. Then out of nowhere, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead of Isaac. The Bible says Abraham called that place “Jehovah Jireh.” “The Lord will provide.”
God can supply all of your needs. He can supply your needs at the right time, the right place, for the right purpose, and through the right person. When He does things for you, His timing is everything. And it is because of this that we call Him Jehovah Jireh.
