God Loves Big Churches Too
"And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." — Acts 2:47
Does God prefer small churches?
The very first church was birthed as a mega church. I know many people say, "I don't like big churches. I like small churches where everyone knows everyone." Well, guess what? In the first church, not everyone knew everyone because God was inviting people to be part of that family of faith.
On the day of Pentecost, 3,000 people gave their lives to Christ in one day. Three thousand! And the Scripture tells us that God added to their number daily those who were being saved. Daily. The church was growing rapidly.
Some people have a bias against large churches. They think bigger means shallower, or that large churches can't provide real community. But that's not what Scripture shows us.
God birthed the church as a mega church. He could have started it small and intimate. He could have kept it to the 12 disciples. But He didn't. He exploded it into thousands immediately because He wanted to show that the Gospel is for the masses.
Now, does that mean God doesn't love small churches? Of course not. God loves every local church that preaches His Word and makes disciples. But let's stop criticizing churches for being large when God Himself launched the church at massive scale.
The issue isn't the size of the church. The issue is whether that church is faithfully preaching the Gospel, making disciples, and connecting people to Jesus Christ.
The early church was huge, but they still had intimate community. How? They met in large gatherings in the temple courts, and they met in small groups in homes. They had both the large celebration and the small connection.
Don't judge a church by its size. Judge it by its faithfulness to Scripture. Does it preach the Word? Does it call people to salvation? Does it provide opportunities for real community and discipleship?
If God is adding to a church daily, who are we to criticize? Let's celebrate what God is doing—whether it's in a church of 50 or a church of 5,000.
God loves His church—all sizes, all shapes—as long as it's built on Jesus Christ.
