Years ago, a young theologian from the Church of England became friends with an uneducated cobbler who knew the Bible remarkably well. Another theologian, prideful and eager to stump the simple man, asked him, "What do you know about the Urim and the Thummim?"
The cobbler said, "Well, I don't rightly know, except I know those words mean 'light' and 'perfection.' They were stones in the high priest's breastplate used for determining God's will. But you know what I've found? If God wants to make you sharp and useful as a cutting tool for His kingdom's work, you know what He'll do? He'll bring somebody else into your life.
And you know how you sharpen a knife? There's gotta be pressure. There's gotta be tension. There's gotta be close connection.

Have you ever felt like you couldn't measure up?
Early on when I became pastor of this church, my wife started taking a turn physically. I remember going to a deacons meeting because I had a presupposition that every time the doors opened on Sunday morning, the pastor's wife needed to be seen seated next to the pastor.
I said, "Guys, I've gotta tell you—my wife is struggling physically. We're praying God will heal her, but if He chooses to withhold that healing, we're going to walk with Him regardless. But if your mentality is that you need a pastor and his wife visible all the time, then maybe I'm not your guy. I am committed to her before I'm committed to you." Read More

One of the best takeaways we can learn from the church at Philadelphia in Revelation chapter 3 is that we must stay focused on Christ no matter what tough circumstances come our way.

Showing Commitment To Christ
