Take the Weight Off
"The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them." — Ezekiel 18:20
Are you carrying weight that isn't yours to carry?
You can do your best as a parent. You can give it an all-American try to guide them, but it is all about how they choose to respond to Christ. God was the greatest Father to Israel, but Israel still wandered from Him.
Some of you may be heartbroken over some of the decisions that your children have made, and you are heartbroken over the consequences. You are still their parent, but you are not responsible for their personal decisions. Take that weight off yourself.
It is about their relationship with Christ. You will not have to give an account of the decisions that they made. They will have to give an account for their decisions just as you will have to stand before God.
Listen to me carefully: You did not fail as a parent just because your adult child walked away from God. God Himself was a perfect Father, and His children still rebelled. If God experienced that, why do you think you should be immune?
You prayed. You taught them. You took them to church. You modeled faith in your home. You did everything you knew to do. But at some point, they became responsible for their own choices.
Yes, keep praying. Yes, keep loving them. Yes, keep the door open. But stop carrying the crushing guilt that somehow you ruined them. Stop replaying every parenting mistake in your head, wondering if you had just done this one thing differently, they'd be walking with Jesus today.
Their salvation is between them and God. Not between you and God. You cannot save them. Only Jesus can do that.
It is important for you to understand that there is freedom in Christ. Just make sure you are right with God through Christ. Love your children. Pray for them faithfully. But release them to God and take that unbearable weight off your shoulders.
God loves your children even more than you do. Trust Him with them.
