A Word of Blessing
May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed. May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the Lord grant all your requests. (Psalm 20:4-5)
I can’t forget the moment when I opened a short, encouraging card from a friend of mine and read this verse out loud. Apparently, he knew I needed the encouragement and blessing this verse would supply. You see, I had just begun to pastor a new church and I was beginning my first day on the job. His letter was the first one I received. He probably does not remember sending me that letter, but his needed encouragement is still fresh in my memory. What a word of blessing!
When David wrote this Psalm, he probably had no idea that one day his divinely inspired words would take root within my heart. There is just something magnificent about a fitting word, which is used to encourage a fellow pilgrim. Praying that God would give a friend the desires of his heart is a big prayer. On top of that, choosing to celebrate a friend’s victory rather than being jealous of their success is a rare thing in this culture of competition. God wants us to act just like this for our friends.
Who are you encouraging today? Your children? Your friends? Your co-workers? Do they know you are on their side and their biggest cheerleader? If you feel that, have you blessed them by letting them know, either by a note, an e-mail, or a text message, that you are in their corner?
If you are struggling with this concept today, ask God why you are feeling that their blessing means that you have been short-changed. The Lord has not run out of blessings, not even close! Instead, maybe He is waiting for you to become a “blesser” before you become a “blessee.” After you pray for someone’s success, take another step and let them know personally. How about doing that today?
