Recognize His Voice
"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." (John 14:26)
You know that feeling when you're in a crowded mall and suddenly hear your name? Your head snaps up immediately. You know your name. Even more, you know when your spouse or child calls it—you recognize their voice instantly.
I was driving with my grandson last weekend, and from the backseat came his little voice asking, "Grandpa, how do you know God is talking to you?" What a question! I told him about taking my boat out early one morning. The lake was perfectly still, and I felt God nudging me to call a friend I hadn't spoken to in months. It seemed random, but I couldn't shake it. When I finally made the call that afternoon, my friend broke down crying. "How did you know?" he asked. "I was just writing a suicide note."
That wasn't my intuition—that was the Holy Spirit's voice. He's speaking to you too, but maybe you're not recognizing it.
Here's the truth: that uncertainty about which job to take, that relationship problem keeping you up at night, that decision about your child's education—the Holy Spirit wants to guide you through all of it. He's not silent; you might just need to tune your ears to His frequency.
So here's what I want you to try today. Find fifteen minutes of complete quiet. Turn off your phone, TV, and radio. Sit with your Bible open and simply say, "Holy Spirit, I need Your guidance about ______. Please speak to me." Then wait. Read a Scripture passage slowly. Pay attention to the thoughts that come to mind. Write them down.
Don't expect a booming voice from heaven. His voice often comes as a gentle impression, a recurring thought, or a sudden clarity that aligns with Scripture. The more you listen, the better you'll recognize His voice.
You have the incredible gift of God's Spirit living inside you. Stop trying to figure everything out on your own and start listening to the best Counselor in the universe. He's waiting to speak to you right now.
