Christ The Solid Rock
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path. – Proverbs 3:5-6
Let me tell you a story about Edward Mote. He is not a household name today. He was a cabinet maker by trade, who was born into a family of tavern owners in the late 1700’s. His family lineage was alcohol, but at age 15, he came to faith in Christ through the preaching of a man by the name of John Hyatt. He got saved in London. He was a great cabinet maker. Even though his business was a success, he didn't have fulfillment in building cabinets.
About 40 years after he got saved, he became a pastor at the age of 55. He would pastor the same church for the next 21 years. Loving music and hymns a great deal, he became skilled at writing hymns and he composed more than 100 hymns! One day, God laid on his heart the lyrics for one of the most popular hymns of all time. It says,
“My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ the solid rock I stand,
all other ground is sinking sand.”
I don't know who you are trusting. But trust me when I say not to trust in yourself. Don't trust in the advice of human beings. They are built on sinking sand. Don't even trust what you want, because sometimes what you want is not even what is right. The heart is wicked and deceitful above all things, Jeremiah penned. Who should you trust? Christ, the solid rock.
