Keep the Fellowship Flowing
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." — 1 John 1:7
Why do believers need to confess sin?
This confuses some people. If all my sins were forgiven when I gave my life to Christ, why do I need to keep confessing?
Here's the answer: When you give your life to Christ, you are saved. Sin is dealt with at that moment of salvation. Your relationship with God is secure. But after that moment, the only reason you need to confess sin is to make sure the fellowship flows.
Think about marriage. Have you ever done anything that your spouse disapproved of, and it really messed up the fellowship you had? You're still married. The relationship hasn't ended. But the fellowship got disrupted.
I am so grateful to be married to Ginger. When I have done something that displeased her, I told her I was sorry and she forgot about it. She has short-term memory loss when it comes to my offenses.
This is how God treats us. He separates our sin as far as the east is from the west. He holds our sin at bay and chooses to forget about it.
God wants us to be in fellowship with Him. If you know Him, you have given your life to Him. The reason why you should confess sin is because you want to be in the flow of the fellowship of God and to walk in the light.
As a believer, you will never be happy walking outside the light. Will God allow you to walk in darkness? Yes, He will, but you will never be fully happy, never be fully fulfilled, and never be at peace until you come back home to Him.
Confession isn't about earning forgiveness again. It's about restoring fellowship. It's about removing the static from the line so your communication with God flows freely.
If something is disrupting your fellowship with God today, confess it. Clear the air. Get back into the light. The relationship is secure—now let the fellowship flow.
