They Came for the Bread
"Jesus answered, 'Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.'" — John 6:26
Why do people come to Jesus?
There was something about the ministry of Jesus. He didn't worry about drawing a crowd. Why did people come to Him? He was known as someone who met needs.
Sometimes, people came there for the show or another free lunch. God knows how to handle that.
This is an important truth for the church today. Not everyone who shows up has pure motives. Some people come because they want something—financial help, social connections, emotional support, free meals.
And you know what? That's okay.
Jesus fed the 5,000 knowing that many of them would follow Him just for the bread. He healed people knowing some of them would never truly believe. He served people who would eventually abandon Him.
He didn't let impure motives stop Him from meeting needs.
When you're doing ministry, don't get cynical about people's motives. Yes, some people will take advantage of you. Yes, some people will take advantage of the ministry. That doesn't mean we should give up on them.
God wants each of us to be open to the possibility.
Some of the people who came to Jesus for bread eventually stayed for the Gospel. Some of the people who came for healing eventually gave Him their hearts. You never know what God will do in someone's life after they walk through the door—even if they walked in for the wrong reasons.
Don't become a gatekeeper who judges motives. Don't become suspicious of everyone who needs help. Meet the need in front of you and trust God with their heart.
They might come for the bread. But they might stay for the Bread of Life.
God knows how to handle it. Just keep serving.
