Kept from Seeing
"They were kept from recognizing him." — Luke 24:16
What if God is hiding Himself on purpose?
That's a strange thought, but it's exactly what happened on the road to Emmaus. The text says plainly that the two disciples "were kept from recognizing" Jesus. It wasn't just that they failed to see Him. Something, or Someone, prevented them from seeing.
Why would God do that?
Maybe because some lessons can only be learned in the dark. Maybe because faith that doesn't require sight is the kind of faith that grows strongest. Maybe because Jesus wanted them to wrestle with the Scriptures before they experienced the revelation.
"Truly you are a God who has been hiding himself, the God and Savior of Israel" (Isaiah 45:15).
There are seasons in the Christian life when God seems hidden. You pray and hear nothing. You seek and don't find, at least not right away. You walk the road feeling utterly alone.
But hidden doesn't mean absent. Sometimes God allows you to walk blindly so that when your eyes finally open, the recognition is all the more powerful.
When the disciples finally saw Jesus, their hearts burned within them. The revelation was worth the wait. The hiddenness made the unveiling that much sweeter.
If you're in a season where God seems hidden, don't give up. Keep walking. Keep talking. Keep wrestling with His Word.
The moment of recognition is coming.
