God’s Grace and Mercy
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:8-10)
How would you answer the question, “How do I see God?” Many of us want to blame God for what is happening in the world and in our lives. We wonder, “Why, why, why, why?” As we read Scripture and gain a better understanding of God’s character, we realize that blaming God is the last thing we should be doing. Instead, we should be full of praise and worship Him because of what He has done for us.
He has shown us mercy and grace. Do you know what mercy is? He doesn’t give you what you deserve. What do you deserve? You technically deserve hell for your sins. If God is withholding what you deserve, that is mercy.
Do you know what grace is? Grace is when God gives you what you don’t deserve. Grace is God’s unmerited favor. God gives you freedom and forgiveness. He gives you joy and fulfillment. He gives you purpose and direction. He gives you peace. We don't deserve those things. When you are a child of Jesus, you receive these and more!
Do you see God as a gracious and merciful God? If not, I encourage you to spend time in your Bible and read verses specifically about the grace and mercy of God. When you read these verses, the Holy Spirit will give you a better picture of God’s amazing character.
