More and More
"Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more." — 1 Thessalonians 4:1
Is your walk with God still growing, or has it just gotten comfortable?
Notice how Paul talks to the Thessalonians here. He doesn't scold them. He actually brags on them. He says, "You're already doing this." And then in the very same breath he says, "Now do it more and more."
That tells me holiness isn't a finish line you cross. It's a road you keep walking.
Think about a garden. You don't pull the weeds once in the spring and call it done for the year. If you've ever tried that, you know what your garden looks like by August. A garden that isn't tended doesn't stay the same. It goes backward.
Our spiritual lives work the same way. Many of us can remember a season when we were on fire for Jesus. We read our Bibles, we prayed, and we couldn't get enough of Him. Then somewhere along the way, we settled in. We didn't walk away from God. We just stopped walking toward Him.
Paul uses the word "walk" on purpose. Walking is steady. It's one step, then another step, day after day. God isn't asking for a burst of spiritual energy that fizzles out by Tuesday. He's asking for a daily, growing desire to please Him.
And here's the good news. You don't have to do this in your own strength. The same God who began a good work in you has promised to finish it. He's the One doing the growing. Your part is to keep walking with Him.
So let me ask you: What's one step you can take this week to please Him a little more than you did last week? Maybe it's getting up fifteen minutes earlier to spend time in His Word. Maybe it's finally dealing with an attitude you've been excusing. Whatever it is, take that step today. Then take another one tomorrow. That's what "more and more" looks like.
