Looking for Hope
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” (Lamentations 3:24)
Is there hope? Why do you attend church? Why do you watch preachers on television? Do you go to church on Sunday to show off your newest outfit? Do you tune into a sermon out of obligation, or to fulfill some expectation? My guess would be that these aren’t the reasons you come to church or watch church on TV. Instead, I believe people come to church because they are looking for hope.
They are looking for hope in the middle of their tough circumstances. They are searching for help in extricating themselves from a particular situation. They want God to work in amazing, redeeming ways in their lives.
When we are leaning on God for hope, help, and healing, we can be confident that He is the greatest source for all of these things. No one and nothing on this planet can satisfy us the way He can. After we come to this conclusion, we need to point others to Jesus, so they can find hope, help, and healing, as well.
The greatest legacy we could ever leave on this earth to the people coming behind us is a life who pointed other people to Christ. We don’t want our children and grandchildren making the same mistakes we made. Instead, we desire for them to find fulfillment and contentment from the Creator, rather than things of this world. We long for them to thrive in their relationship with the Lord, seeking Him first and living a life that is fully dedicated and surrendered to Him.
If this is what we want to see, we need to start by setting an example for them right now. Let’s remind those around us and behind us that if they are looking for hope, we know where to find it. We can point them down the right path, and that path is one they will never regret taking.
