The Authority of Scripture
"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." – Matthew 5:16-17
In today’s key passage, Jesus imparts a profound revelation about the authority, inspiration, and sufficiency of God's Word. He says, "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."
In these verses, Jesus establishes the relevance and authority of Scripture. He affirms that His mission is not to dismantle or undermine the teachings of the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them completely. He makes it clear that everywhere the Bible speaks, it is correct—each verse and each passage carries the weight of divine authority and truth.
However, Jesus also warns us of the limitations of human interpretation. He reminds us to be careful not to create doctrines and dogmas where the Word of God remains silent. It's a call to humility and discernment, acknowledging that our understanding is nothing compared to God’s because His wisdom is infinite.
At the end of the day, our aim should always be to align our lives with the revealed Word of God. We are called to embody the principles and teachings found within Scripture, allowing its truth to shape our beliefs, attitudes, and actions.
Ultimately, the authority, inspiration, and sufficiency of God's Word are not merely theological concepts but practical realities that should be present in every aspect of our lives. As we embrace the divine authority of Scripture and align our lives with its teachings, we become lights that shine before the lost, illuminating the world with the transformative power of God's truth and love.
