Take God at His Word
Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy. - Proverbs 28:13
God wants you to be free. He doesn’t want you to stay stuck where you are. But finding freedom is a team effort. The one thing you must do to break free from the shame that is holding you back is to take God at His Word.
So many people appear happy on the outside but are riddled with bullet holes of shame on the inside. They’ve chosen their own way rather than God’s way, and it has produced shame. So if we want freedom from that shame, we have to believe what God says is true.
This concept makes me think of my 3-year-old grandson, Sagey. I had made a path in the snow and said, “Just follow me.” But, of course, he went into the deeper snow and did his own thing. That’s what many of us do as we follow Jesus. When God says, “Walk this way,” we go another way. And we find ourselves stuck in sin and shame.
To be free, we must own our rebellion and repent. We must confess our sin, not justify it or blame others. “Confession” means to agree with God that what we did was wrong. Then, we must show true contrition. Not because we were caught, but because we’ve lost intimacy with the God who loves us. We also need to wage a personal campaign against sin, which means stepping away from anything or anyone that draws us back into the mud.
If you want to be free, walk with people who love Christ and are in love with His Word. You are not trapped. There is a way out. And it begins when you take God at His Word.
