Freedom That Leads to Holiness
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. – Galatians 5:13
If you are a follower of Jesus, you are free in Christ to decide for yourself, through the influence of the Holy Spirit, about what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. God wants us never to use our freedom to hurt someone else. We must not submit ourselves to things that put us in bondage. But when we submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit’s leading, we can experience true freedom in Christ.
If you need something to relax—whether it’s alcohol, shopping, or anything else—you are not free. You are describing yourself in bondage. The very things that we often use to get out of our pain are usually the things that create the greatest pain in our lives.
God wants His children to be Spirit-driven, not flesh-driven. Galatians 5 reminds us that the acts of the flesh are obvious—but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Holiness flows when we keep in step with the Spirit. God doesn’t want legalism for His children. He wants love and surrender. Holiness isn’t about perfection—it’s about letting the Spirit lead you every day. Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. That’s how we live holy and free.
