You Don't Have to Agree
"Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor." — Romans 12:10
Do you think you have to agree with someone in order to love them?
Let me tell you something. If that were true, none of us would ever stay married.
My wife and I are so different. I like my eggs one way, she likes hers another way. I like hot Mexican food, she prefers something milder. I go buying, she goes shopping. I used to get frustrated with her shopping trips until one day she explained it to me. She said, "When I go shopping, it's like you going hunting. I'm on the hunt for some way to save you money." I've saved millions of dollars over the years, I guess.
The point is, you don't have to be on the same page about everything. You just need to be in the same house, willing to work through the differences. And that's true in marriage, and it's true in the body of Christ.
God gave you the partner He gave you, and He put you in the church He put you in, to help you learn what it really means to love. That means being patient with people who think differently than you do. It means encouraging people whose backgrounds don't match yours. It means honoring people who you might not naturally be drawn to.
Loving the brothers is a command, not a suggestion. And the beautiful thing is, when you obey it, you find yourself becoming more like Jesus. And that's the whole point.
