Delight Yourself in Jesus
Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)
Many of us think that finding God’s will is extremely difficult, a never-ending mystery that often seems impossible to solve. In reality, that is not the case at all. God makes His will for us clear in His Word. We just have to be willing to look for it. As C. S. Lewis says, “The deep things of God are not stacked one shelf above the other; rather, they are stacked one shelf below another, so even the simplest of us can find it.”
Psalm 37:4 was written in my ordination Bible years ago by my father-in law. It says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
Read that verse again: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Do you know what many of us pray? “Oh, God, give me what I want, and then I will love you very much.” We invert that verse when we say, “God, I want to do this. I want to go there. I want this for my life.” When we are upside down, we wonder why there is so much chaos in our lives.
God wants you to press into Jesus, to delight yourself in Him, not what He will do for you. He wants you to long for Him. Fall in love with Jesus and do the things to help you fall in love with Jesus. Those things are prayer, Bible study, and fellowship with other believers. Practice the discipline of having a time alone with God every day, when you allow His Word to sink into you and change your thinking and focus. When you make Jesus the center of your heart and life, He will give you what you want.
